What Is an Integrated Circuit (IC)?

An Integrated Circuit (IC) is a small electronic chip made of semiconductor material (usually silicon) that contains many electronic components such as transistors, resistors, capacitors, and diodes on a single chip. These components work together to perform specific electronic functions.

Integrated Circuits are the foundation of modern electronics. Without ICs, devices like smartphones, computers, medical machines, and automobiles would not be possible.

History of Integrated Circuits

Before ICs, electronic circuits were built using separate (discrete) components. These circuits were:

  • Large in size

  • Expensive

  • Power-hungry

  • Less reliable

In 1958, the first IC was invented, which combined multiple components onto one chip. This invention changed the electronics world forever and started the microelectronics revolution.

An IC is built on a silicon wafer. The components are etched onto the wafer using advanced manufacturing techniques.

  • Digital ICs handle binary signals (0 and 1)

Analog ICs process continuous electrical signals.
